The subject of safe footpaths is of special concern to EUROVIA. Through the introduction of motor cars and methods of mass transportation, the old trade routes transformed into main roads and motorways. For pilgrims, the safest paths are footpaths and old trading pathways. When traveling lesser known routes (such as the Via Francigena), the pilgrim is often forced to walk on large and dangerous roads. However, the Way of St James shows us that in this century it is also possible for pilgrims to walk over 1000 km without having to resort to using dangerous roads, due to the fact that footpaths and cycle paths have been constructed alongside the main roads. In addition to constructing these paths, it is essential to ensure that they are clearly marked and signposted. Markings must be of a consistent nature, and should be present throughout the entire route.
Will I change on a pilgrimage?
