Mariazell lies in northern Styria, on Austria's southern border.
The city dates back to the year 1157. As a monk was on the way to Mariazell, legend has it that a rock blocked his path. The monk then prayed to Mary for help. The stone then split in two, clearing the way for the monk to pass.
Mariazell is the most important and frequently visited pilgrim site in Austria, and one of the most important pilgrim destinations in central Europe.
