The Roman VIA APPIA
(Regina Viarum) goes back to the 4th Century b.C. Along it are running the paths of the Via Francigena or Via dell’Angelo used by pilgrims for 10 centuries but today altogether forgotten. Since 2 years we are striving to revive it, walking from the banks of the river Garigliano to Rome (some 210 km in 11 days).
We plan to accompany on it a group of 11 Italians and 11 foreigners of mixed nationalities in the first half of may 2009. We can lead walking groups of some 20 foreigners also in other periods of the year.
The itinerary is very interesting (Roman temples, cistercian Basilicas,
monasteries and hermitages, on sandy beaches by the sea, on mountains,
on the shores of 4 lakes, in natural parks, through medieval villages,
20% on original Roman roads, etc.). We make an effort to enjoy the
cultural, spiritual and social values of the way, in meeting the local
communities, in remembering the work of artists (Goethe’s “Italienische
Reise” describes this route), in attending concerts of local ancient
music composers, etc.
Cost per stage: 5 € for luggage transport and legal insurance. Each
participant takes care of his own food and accommodation. If desired,
we look for suitable solutions (less than 45 €/day for room and evening
meal payable directly to local innkeepers). Some cooperation by each
participant for the organization is welcome. Our guide pays his own
costs. Foreign pilgrims of the two past initiatives are prepared to
answer your queries.
